about

The trio “Amateur Observer” was formed in response to the musicapocolypse of 2020.
If music is the healing force of the universe, this trio's original intention was to nurse themselves, and each other with it. All three of these seasoned musicians can compose in real time and they are always ready to extract the extraordinary out of thin air.

Over the past 40 years, Rainer Wiens has developed his own complete grammar and vocabulary on both the electric guitar and kalimbas.

Kim Zombik slips in, prancing, pushing and pulling with text and melody. Stories glimmer. She looks at each musical moment with child-like eyes and reacts spontaneously with playful authenticity.

Nicolas Caloia uses his bass to convince, evoke, construct and destroy...enjoying change and potency.

Over the last thirty years contemporary jazz musician Rainer Wiens has developed a completely singular and most original guitar styles. He has composed music for dance, theater, television, and film. During the í80s Wiens appeared in performances across Canada and in Europe with his jazz group, Silk Stockings. Along with Tom Walsh, he was a founding member of the group N.O.M.A., and he also started Sound Image Theater. Currently, Rainer Wiens works closely with Malcolm Goldstein, John Heward, Nicolas Caloia, and Frank Lozano.

Nicolas Caloia is a Montreal based double bassist, composer, bandleader and the artistic director of the production company Musique Rayonnante. For the past thirty-five years he has worked at creating a living music by using rigorously composed material to channel collective improvisation, and has composed for and led many ensembles including 20 piece, Juno and GAMIQ nominated Ratchet Orchestra. Nicolas Caloia is appreciated for his musical integrity, and his wide-open ears. He has been active in Montreal as a bass player, composer, and organizer since the early 1990s. Caloiaís music can be heard in ongoing collaborations with Tristan Honsinger, Joe McPhee, Matana Roberts, Malcolm Goldstein, Lori Freedman, Kim Zombik, Sam Shalabi, and Jean Derome or in past projects with Roscoe Mitchell, Marshall Allen, Steve Lacy, Hassan Hakmoun, William Parker, and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. He has fulfilled composition commissions from the Quatuor Bozzini, Tour de Bras, Productions Super Musique, FIMAV, Radio Canada, and CKUT 90.3 fm. He tours internationally with ìIn the Seaî, a string trio with Tristan Honsinger and Joshua Zubot, or with Mercury - a duet with Lori Freedman.
